Anxiety – Neurotherapy Can Help

Anxiety can take the form of constant worry or having the inability to relax.  At times, it can feel like the brain has its own never-ending “Honey Do” list that loops 24 hours a day. Many people who struggle with anxiety also report having insomnia because they are up all night with a “busy brain” that won’t quiet down.  If the brain is less “busy”, then this results in falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer.  Improved sleep is essential for the brain to work at an optimal and calm state.

Neurofeedback can help with anxiety and insomnia by teaching the client to increase relaxing brainwaves and decrease the more active brainwaves associated with anxiety.  It has also been shown to decrease heart rate reactivity in the presence of environmental stressors.  Once we can train our brains and bodies to relax, we can better control our internal mind chatter and perform better during the day. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are three disorders that have been shown to be helped by Neurofeedback training.  Excessive worry or frequently feeling keyed up are common symptoms of GAD.  The individual suffering from GAD can experience symptoms such as racing heart rate, sweating, lightheadedness, and irritability.  PTSD is exhibited in a person who has experienced a severely traumatic event.  The individual may feel like the event is recurring at that moment or have nightmares about the trauma.OCD is a disorder that causes a person to continuously engage in a specific behavior or thought.  They get stuck in these ritualistic patterns that it causes anxiety when these rituals aren’t performed.  A person struggling with these disorders is unable to control these occurrences in the body and it causes great distress to their daily functioning.  Neurofeedback can help by training the brain to produce a calm state and inhibiting the stress response that is activated by an anxious brain.  The Better Brain Center specializes in this non-invasive brain optimization technique and is the largest neurofeedback clinic in Virginia and the metropolitan DC area.
