Millions of adults suffer from chronic pain in the United States with the most common types being low back pain, neck pain, and migraines. Medical professionals are not being adequately trained in pain management and pain relievers only provide short term relief, thus, many are looking elsewhere for a solution. While science may be a long way off from a snap solution, there is another intervention that can be effective for pain management called neurofeedback. Neurofeedback trains the brain to control the perception of pain signals and as a result can ease discomfort. Training the brain to regulate the processing of these biomarkers of distress allows the person to feel a reduction, and in some cases elimination of pain. Research has shown the efficacy of neurofeedback in managing symptoms common with fibromyalgia, migraines, and knee pain. Areas of the brain associated with pain can be associated with other disorders such as anxiety and depression which can develop as a result of coping with chronic pain.

There have been numerous instances where neurofeedback has helped provide relief from pain. Joe complained of experiencing migraine headaches every day for the past ten years. The pain was so great that it affected almost every aspect of his life. He had a high sensitivity to light so being indoors or outdoors caused a migraine. Joe had tried over-the-counter pharmaceuticals but that only gave him temporary relief and he desperately needed to find another solution. He found out about neurofeedback by doing an internet search and decided to give it a try. After about 20 sessions, he found that the frequency and intensity of his migraines had diminished drastically. He reported reducing his usage of over-the-counter pills. The lights in his office did not bother him as much and he reported being able to work outdoors with more ease. When working with chronic pain clients at The Better Brain Center, we utilize neurofeedback and biofeedback devices that complement each other for pain relief.
